We are witnessing a number of consolidations in the BPO industry. This is a trend which is widely expected to continue -- even become stronger -- over the next year. Gartner recently produced a report saying 25% of today’s top BPO vendors won’t exist as separate entities by 2012. (We’ll be posting an interview analyst Robert Brown soon). We are also seeing more firms that were previously focused on IT services (Canon, Xerox, IBM, Dell) moving into the BPO space. Acquisition offers an easy route, as well as access to emerging or growth markets, or to greenfield sites, like Japan, where BPO activity is still relatively rare. "Buy" rather than "build" may be a winning strategy.

As the wage inflation of the past combines with the recession of the present, rural outsourcing is growing. This skips over 2nd and 3rd tier cities in favor of smaller towns. Companies tend to be smaller, but are building a reputation. Rural Shores, in India, is just one example of what is to come.

A final word on growth trends, as we leave another transformative year behind: Procurement outsourcing, legal process outsourcing, knowledge process outsourcing, -- and marketing! All areas of expertise that have a long way to go in the sourcing world.

We’ll do our best to keep you updated on what’s happening. Season’s greetings to all
