This Week ... World Cup to World Class, Global Goals to Global Awards...

OK, we are now halfway through the World Cup and the world is enjoying a day of rest (and the chance to catch up with what’s happening at Wimbledon and Glastonbury, which kicked off yesterday!) Football (soccer to our US friends) is about to enter the brutal knockout phase, starting tomorrow – eight matches, after which we are already at quarterfinals. Meanwhile, SSON has been running its own competition of sorts – the Australasian Awards, which were announced in Melbourne earlier this month and in which the public sector followed Europe’s lead and put in a good showing. Online, our columnists have been livening up the website, and are all getting a bit sparky in the run-up to summer: Anupam Diwan is pushing Watermelons. More specifically, she is reminding us that just because something is green on the outside doesn’t mean it’s green on the inside. She is, of course, talking about dashboards and warning that trouble may be brewing within, even when there are no flashing red lights apparent. She has a solution though: tracking indicators that signal deviation from the norm (like underspent budgets, for example). Lee Coulter is worried about similar indicators and has just launched a Client Status Dashboard at Ascension Health’s SSO to track individual accounts through a more subjective assessment of how service events that fall outside the lines are being perceived. "The fact that we are paying attention to it, and doing something about it, is everything," he says. Anil Prem DSouza is perhaps taking the most aggressive line: "E-mail is dead – long live collaborative tools" is his mantra – or something to that extent. If you don’t believe him, he lists 5 pretty persuasive reasons for jumping onto the bandwagon today, rather than waiting. Finally, The Coca-Cola Company has been a BIG sponsor of the World Cup (see one of my favorite World Cup videos below – but there are plenty more to warm your heart online) so I thought it opportune to find out who their Director of HR Operations (for Europe, Eurasia and Africa) is. I asked our columnist Simon Brown to track down Stuart Martin, and ask him a few questions about what has made his HR strategy such a success for this mega-giant of the beverage world.
