Barbara Hodge speaks with the event’s producer, Niamh Byrne, to ask how you can get the best out of this event Barbara Hodge: Niamh, SSON has been running events around the world for 16 years. Why run a virtual event now? Niamh Byrne: Yes, SSON has built up a really successful stable of events. What we’ve noticed, though, is that between events delegates fall into a kind of vacuum. They leave the conference pumped up and full of new ideas … but they don’t maintain that momentum once they’re back in the office. So this virtual event was put together to fill that gap: to provide a more continuous learning environment by pulling the most popular presentations of 2011 into a package that can be accessed from your desk or on the go, at any time. AS more and more people are making use of smart phones and mobile devices, commuting time can be turned into learning time, to further your skill-sets. The other thing we realized is that not everyone can make our conferences, for whatever reasons: calendar clashes, time, etc. So we wanted to provide a venue to those people, an opportunity for them, from their desk or wherever they are, to hear from some really outstanding practitioners. And although there is no comparison to a 3-day on site event, where you network non-stop and pick up valuable pointers over coffee breaks, this virtual format allows Q&A and encourages interactions with other participants, both during and after the presentations. So how would someone make the most of this opportunity? The easiest way to access this content is to register for all 15 presentations. We’ll be running three webinars every Tuesday and Thursday, starting today, until February 14. The great thing is that if you cannot make the presentation "live" you’ll be sent a link to watch it in your own time. That’s what makes it really great and adaptable to people’s schedules. And what is the cost? The cost is $249 per person, but that comes down to $99 a person if you sign up a team from your organization. I saw that you’ve color-coordinated the presentations. How, does this work? We’ve grouped the sessions into four key categories to make it easy for delegates to select what they want. The four categories are: planning and launching, core competencies, streamlining and scope expansion, and added value/mature operations. So color-coding is a way to make it easy for delegates to decide which sessions to go for. What is it that stands out about this event? We wanted to harness social media to keep the momentum going between our live events. As more and more of our members are using social media, smart phones, iPads, etc, we wanted to offer a product that would enable them to take part in our knowledge exchange wherever they are, at whatever time, and according to their needs. Plus: participants can see who is 'logged in' to the event and initiate a private chat to exchange ideas and contact details.
