Imagine a situation where:

  • 80% of work is done in GBS / Shared Services
  • 10% of work is done by truly focused Strategic Business Partners; and
  • 10% of work is done by design thinkers in Centers of Expertise

This is a design principle that can be applied to GBS, to Finance, to HR, to IT – or to any other enabling function.

It assumes that GBS, supported by data and technology, can increasing move up the value chain beyond basic transactions to provide a wider portfolio of services and consulting; and it assumes that the other two points of the triangle are lean, mean ,focused and not overstaffed!

There are challenges, of course, that need to be overcome with this design. In reality, not all organizations have yet fully bought into this guiding principle, or fully deployed it.

In this podcast Ger Hussey (above left) interviews Simon Brown (above right) to draw on Simon's experience with Global Business Services (GBS) over the past 12 years.

Simon outlines his insights from his consulting work with The Coca Cola Company, Becton Dickinson and GKN Automotive.

This discussion between peers explores, through an HR lens, both challenges as well as benefits in designing, implementing, maintaining and running GBS. Ger and Simon invite feedback, views and opinions from listeners.
