The CIO's new role: encouraging "connectedness"

Lanco Infratech Limited is a large Indian business conglomerate involved in construction, power, real estate, and several other industries. The group of companies is among the fastest growing in the world. We wanted to know – straight from Lanco's CIO – what role he plays in furthering this growth, and how the new digital environment is making itself felt. SSON’s Darwin Jayson Mariano sat down with Ajay Kumar Dhir, Executive Director and Group CIO, Lanco Infratech to discuss this and other questions. A decade or so ago, CIOs were primarily responsible for IT management. Today, that's a given, and CIOs are focused, instead, on organizational transformation. At its root, transformation is about process management, however – and that is where Mr. Dhir sees his primary responsibility: in connecting people, process and technology. It's a part of the job that he says many CIOs overlook. Connecting people comes first: that means ensuring that there are robust processes in support of talent management – starting with acquisition and ending with clear career paths and leadership training. The CIO's job, Dhir says, is to build strong, employee-centric processes that support the hiring, retention, and grooming of talent in-house. The other side of the "connectedness" coin is about connecting the business so that information is shared and the right decisions are taken. One of the challenges facing Mr. Dhir today is managing Lanco's exposure from the escalating wave of social media. His main concern is to configure appropriate policies and protect Lanco from any vulnerability in its systems, whether IT, enterprise, or social.
